Remembering Our Lives Project

Coming Soon––

To memorialize one of the biggest jumps I’ve made in nearly 10 years, from an art perspective, I am proposing a collaborative group art project on an international scale. Here, I’ll jump straight into the who, what, when and everywhere you are. More about my last 10 years to follow, and emerge, throughout this site’s pages.

Having been immersed deeply in my dad’s last years while grappling with a Lewey Bodies diagnosis and its itinerant dementia, I had the chance to witness the impact of dementia on my dad, as well as, in a second hand way, learn from other families through years of participating in caregiver support groups. This, as well as from the given statistic regarding dementia in the elderly–that by age 85, half of Americans are likely to be diagnosed with some form of dementia. As is common knowledge at this point, memory disorder is prominently presented in all cases of dementia. It is a most heartbreaking experience for family members to go through.

Remembering Our Lives will employ varying artistic approaches. In answer, through beauty, to address the neurological epidemic affecting huge numbers of the aging, who live in the industrialized regions of our planet.

Edition 1 of the Remembering Our Lives Project –

Travelling Graffiti

What: A pair of scrolls housed within a pair of triangular tubes.

Who: Participants are invited to join from whatever region of our planet they hail from. This will be a mail/shipping collaborative project. There may be other digital ways of art transference, as well, in light of the rapid changes we are facing in our world presently.

Each scroll will have a given theme, on which people can “graffiti” their section of the scroll, with their own personal response to the guidelines and themes proposed.

When: Late Spring to early Summer of 2025

Where: Wherever you are–so long as it’s a place where you can collect/send mail/electronic transfers.

How: Interested contributors will register to be included on the mailing list/lists for their respective chosen editions. Fully detailed instructions will be included in a confirmation email sent to all who subscribe to participate.

Here is a short and simple outline of how Edition 1/Traveling Graffiti will be carried out–

This will be a scroll version of the old familiar written version of “Exquisite Corpse” writing exercise. Remember that old sheet of paper fan folded so that all entries are hidden except for the one entered prior to your receipt of the fan folded sheet?

This is similar, but instead of a folded sheet, this involves a two-handled scroll with each handled end ensconced within a decorated triangular tube, each with a crank on one end. As each entry is made and completed, that section of scroll will be cranked into the “Finished” housing, leaving only an inch visible outside of the box. The next recipient will crank out fresh blank scroll from the “Fresh Scroll” box, where they can make their entry. And likewise, they will collect their section into the “Finished” scroll housing.

So each contributor will only see about an inch from the last entry, and they can use that information, or not, to influence their own subsequent entry.
