Beyond Nomadland

This title will present content about the mobile American. This content tells the story that goes beyond the story of the wealthier, mega-RV roving set.

This is about the affected numbers of the Boomer generation, and quite a few younger people, too. In LA, it’s the hundreds of thousands, who have been trying to get housing in a world that outstrips their Social Security, or otherwise limited incomes.

For them, a safe place isn’t the decked out van life situation, that inspires so many to dream that “one day” dream.

With their animal companions, and whatever adaptations they add to their passenger vehicles, they live in the margins of society. They live in their cars.

In LA, it’s frequently said that this condition can, and does, happen to anyone. For so many reasons. And the answers for getting into affordable housing, for becoming part of a supportive community, fall far short of what is possible.

What gets done in other countries needs to be seriously considered. Now, with the huge numbers of newly unhoused persons, due to the devastating fires in LA, it is paramount that we begin to look beyond our limited solutions.

We need to consider what effectively works, what can actually provide spaces for people within shared communities. And quickly. With far less expense than anything tried thus far. We need to pursue answers which can also include social services, which can help keep more unhoused people from falling off the edge. It’s a matter of keeping sane, and no longer being alone.
